PBNs can be quite tricky, and having been burned in the past I was very apprehensive. But their service happens to be quite safe as my website has not seen any penalties. On the contrary, we’ve seen an increase in rankings.

I must say, quite an affordable service for the quality delivered. The links are well placed and the websites look genuine for the most part. I’ll be back again.

Every few months, someone contacts me in a panic. Their rankings dropped, they found some sketchy links pointing to their site, and they're convinced a competitor is attacking them with negative SEO.

Sometimes they're right. Usually they're not.

Negative SEO—the practice of deliberately harming a competitor's search rankings through malicious tactics—is a real thing that exists. But its actual prevalence and effectiveness are wildly overstated in most SEO circles. Let's sort out what's genuine risk versus what's paranoia.

What Negative SEO Actually Looks Like

The most common negative SEO tactic is building spammy backlinks to a competitor's site—thousands of low-quality links from gambling sites, adult content, pharma spam, and link farms. The theory is that Google will see these links and penalize the target site for having a toxic backlink profile.

Other tactics include: scraping and republishing a site's content to create duplicate content issues, sending fake removal requests to sites linking to the target, hacking the target site to inject spam, creating fake negative reviews, and filing false DMCA takedowns.

Of these, the spammy backlink approach is by far the most common because it's the easiest to execute. You can buy tens of thousands of spam links for almost nothing on certain platforms. Whether those links actually accomplish anything is a different question entirely.

Google's Position (And Why It Matters)

Here's something many people miss: Google has strong incentives to make negative SEO not work.

Think about it from their perspective. If competitors could reliably tank each other's rankings by pointing bad links at them, Google's search results would become a battlefield where the winner is whoever's most willing to play dirty. That's not a search engine anyone wants to use.

Google has stated repeatedly that they can identify and ignore most spammy links pointed at sites maliciously. Their systems have evolved significantly since the early Penguin days when link-based penalties were more indiscriminate. The modern algorithm is much better at understanding that sites don't control who links to them.

Does this mean negative SEO never works? No. But it means the bar for actually damaging a site through malicious links is much higher than it used to be.

When Negative SEO Is Actually Effective

Let's be honest about the scenarios where negative SEO can still cause problems:

New or small sites with thin link profiles. If your site has 50 backlinks and someone points 10,000 spam links at it, those spam links now dominate your profile. Google's ability to ignore them depends partly on having enough good signals to distinguish from the noise.

Sites already close to penalty territory. If your existing link profile is already borderline—full of low-quality links from your own past efforts—a negative SEO attack might push you over the edge. The attack isn't really the cause; it's the final straw.

Highly competitive niches with manual review. In some spaces—gambling, pharma, payday loans—Google applies more scrutiny. A negative SEO campaign in these niches might trigger a manual review where someone actually looks at your profile and asks questions.

Combined attacks using multiple vectors. Pure link spam rarely works alone. But combined with hacking attempts, fake reviews, content scraping, and other tactics, an attacker might cause cumulative damage.

Why Most 'Negative SEO' Isn't

Here's the uncomfortable truth: most of the time when someone thinks they've been hit by negative SEO, something else is actually happening.

Algorithm updates. Rankings drop, people notice bad links in their profile, and assume the two are connected. But those bad links might have been there for years doing nothing. The ranking drop came from a core update, not the links.

Natural spam link accumulation. Every site on the internet attracts spam links over time. Scraper sites, auto-generated directories, and spam bots link to sites randomly. Finding spam links in your profile doesn't mean someone put them there maliciously.

Past link building coming back to bite. That aggressive link building campaign from 2019? Those links might finally be catching up to you. It's not negative SEO—it's consequences from your own past decisions.

Competitors simply out-executing. Sometimes rankings drop because competitors improved, not because anyone attacked you. We explored why most link building campaigns fail—and blame-shifting to imaginary attackers is one pattern we see.

How to Actually Protect Yourself

Instead of panicking about negative SEO, focus on building a profile that's resilient to both attacks and algorithm changes:

Build a strong foundation of quality links. The best defense against spam links is having enough good links that the spam becomes noise. A site with 500 high-quality backlinks from relevant sites isn't going to be tanked by 5,000 spam links. Google can see the difference.

Monitor your backlink profile regularly. Use Ahrefs, Semrush, or Google Search Console to keep an eye on new links appearing. Set up alerts for unusual spikes. Catching a potential attack early gives you options.

Diversify your link types and sources. A profile that includes legitimate guest posts, editorial mentions, citations, niche edits, and PBN links from quality networks is more robust than one built entirely from a single source.

Secure your site properly. Hacking is a more effective negative SEO vector than spam links. Use strong passwords, keep your CMS updated, and use security plugins. If someone can inject spam into your actual site, that's far worse than external spam links.

The Disavow Question

Should you disavow spam links pointing at your site? This is genuinely complicated.

Google's official position is that you probably don't need to disavow unless you've received a manual action or you know you have problematic links from your own past efforts. They claim their algorithms already ignore most spam links automatically.

The counterargument is that disavowing obviously spammy links can't hurt and might help. If you've got obvious garbage in your profile—thousands of links from Russian pharmacy sites or Chinese knockoff stores—telling Google to ignore them seems prudent.

My take: if you're seeing a sustained, obvious negative SEO campaign with clear intent to harm, disavowing makes sense. If you're just seeing the normal background noise of internet spam, don't waste your time. We offer link auditing and cleanup services for sites that genuinely need a profile cleanup, but most don't.

Putting It in Perspective

In over a decade of doing this work, I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen a genuinely damaging negative SEO attack on a client site. And in most of those cases, the site had pre-existing vulnerabilities—thin link profiles, borderline content, or past link building sins—that made them susceptible.

Meanwhile, I've seen hundreds of people blame negative SEO for ranking drops that were actually caused by algorithm updates, technical issues, content problems, or their own past link building catching up to them.

The negative SEO boogeyman is convenient because it shifts blame externally. It's never your fault—it's those evil competitors. But that mindset prevents you from addressing the real issues, which are usually within your control.

What To Do If You Think You're Under Attack

If you genuinely believe you're experiencing a negative SEO attack, here's a rational response:

First, document everything. Screenshot the links, note when they appeared, track the volume. If this ever becomes a legal matter or you need to file a reconsideration request, documentation matters.

Second, verify it's actually an attack and not normal spam. Are these links different in character from the background noise every site receives? Is there clear targeting—exact match anchors to your money pages, for instance?

Third, don't panic. Give it time to see if Google ignores the links automatically. A spike of spam links appearing doesn't mean your rankings will immediately tank.

Fourth, if you're seeing actual ranking damage that correlates with the link spam timeline, consider a disavow file. But be surgical—only disavow clear spam, not links you're just unsure about.

Fifth, continue building good links. The best counter to bad links is more good links. Outpace the attack with legitimate link building.

If you've experienced a genuine ranking drop and need help diagnosing whether it's negative SEO or something else, we've written about recovering from algorithm hits and penalties—the process often reveals what actually caused the problem.

The Bottom Line

Negative SEO exists. It can occasionally work. But it's far less common and far less effective than the SEO rumor mill suggests.

Focus your energy on building a strong, diversified link profile rather than worrying about what competitors might do. A site with genuine authority, quality content, and a healthy backlink profile is extremely difficult to damage through external attacks.

The best defense isn't paranoia—it's just being good at what you do.
