Digital PR vs Link Building: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

These two terms get thrown around interchangeably, which creates confusion. Some agencies rebrand link building as 'digital PR' because it sounds more sophisticated. Others genuinely offer different services under each label. If you're trying to decide where to spend your budget, understanding what you're actually buying matters.

PBNs can be quite tricky, and having been burned in the past I was very apprehensive. But their service happens to be quite safe as my website has not seen any penalties. On the contrary, we’ve seen an increase in rankings.

I must say, quite an affordable service for the quality delivered. The links are well placed and the websites look genuine for the most part. I’ll be back again.

These two terms get thrown around interchangeably, which creates confusion. Some agencies rebrand link building as 'digital PR' because it sounds more sophisticated. Others genuinely offer different services under each label. If you're trying to decide where to spend your budget, understanding what you're actually buying matters.

Let me break down what each approach actually involves, where they overlap, and which one makes sense for different situations.

What Traditional Link Building Looks Like

Link building in its classic form is focused primarily on acquiring backlinks to improve search rankings. The goal is straightforward: get links pointing to your site that will help you rank higher for target keywords.

The tactics vary widely. Guest posting on relevant blogs. Niche edits where your link gets added to existing content. PBN links from private networks. Directory submissions. Resource page outreach. Broken link building. Scholarship link building. The methods differ, but the core objective is the same—more links, better rankings.

Link building tends to be transactional and measurable. You can count exactly how many links you acquired, track the metrics of linking domains, and measure ranking changes. It's direct cause and effect. We've written extensively about why backlinks drive rankings—the mechanism is well understood.

The limitation is that traditional link building often produces links that look like link building. Google has become increasingly sophisticated at identifying patterns associated with paid or manufactured links. Not all link building is detectable, but some tactics have become risky over time.

What Digital PR Actually Involves

Digital PR borrows from traditional public relations but focuses on online publications and measurable outcomes—particularly links and brand mentions.

The typical digital PR process involves creating newsworthy content or campaigns, then pitching them to journalists and publications. This might mean commissioning original research and sharing findings with industry reporters. Creating interactive tools or calculators that publications want to reference. Developing data visualisations around trending topics. Newsjacking—jumping on current events with relevant commentary. Expert commentary and thought leadership placement.

When it works, journalists write about your content or company and link back to you as the source. These links come from genuine editorial decisions rather than direct transactions—a journalist chose to reference you because your content was genuinely useful or newsworthy.

The upside is that these links are about as natural as links get. They're editorial. They're often from high-authority news sites. They're exactly what Google says they want to see.

The downside is unpredictability. You might create brilliant content that nobody covers. You might pitch a hundred journalists and get two responses. The time from campaign creation to link acquisition is longer and less certain than transactional link building.

Where They Overlap

The line between digital PR and link building has blurred considerably. Many activities could reasonably be categorised as either.

Guest posting, for instance. If you're writing genuine thought leadership for industry publications that want your expertise, that's arguably digital PR. If you're paying for placement on blogs that exist primarily to sell links, that's clearly link building. The tactic is the same; the context differs.

Similarly, expert commentary placement. If a journalist reaches out for a quote on a story they're writing, that's PR. If you're using a service that connects you with journalists specifically to get links, the lines blur.

The honest truth is that many agencies use 'digital PR' as a rebrand for link building because it sounds better and commands higher fees. Be cautious about paying premium prices for what's essentially standard link building with a fancier name.

Cost and ROI Differences

Digital PR is typically more expensive per link than traditional link building. A digital PR campaign might cost several thousand pounds and result in five high-authority links if it goes well. Traditional link building at scale might deliver dozens of links for the same budget.

But the comparison isn't entirely fair. Those five digital PR links might come from major news outlets with domain authorities above 90. The link building links might come from sites with DAs of 30-50. Raw link counts don't capture the quality differential.

There's also secondary value to consider. Digital PR often generates brand awareness, social shares, and referral traffic beyond the links themselves. Building a strong backlink profile isn't just about raw numbers—the profile composition matters.

Traditional link building is more predictable. You pay for a certain number of links and receive them. The outcomes are contractual. Digital PR involves more uncertainty—campaigns can succeed spectacularly or fall flat.

Which Approach Fits Your Situation

The right choice depends on your specific circumstances:

If you need predictable, consistent link acquisition: Traditional link building delivers more reliable results. You know what you're getting and when. For ongoing SEO campaigns that need steady link flow, approaches like monthly link building packages provide consistent output without the variability of PR campaigns.

If your primary goal is brand building alongside SEO: Digital PR makes more sense. You're not just getting links—you're getting visibility, credibility, and audience exposure. For brands that need to build reputation, the broader benefits justify the higher cost per link.

If you're in a boring industry: Traditional link building is often easier. Journalists don't write breathless coverage of accounting software or industrial equipment suppliers. These niches can still rank well through steady link acquisition, but generating genuine news coverage is an uphill battle. We've covered link building for boring industries specifically.

If you're in a newsworthy or controversial space: Digital PR has more potential. Finance, health, technology, politics, consumer products—these sectors generate natural media interest. If you can produce genuinely interesting data or takes, journalists will cover you.

If your budget is limited: Link building typically offers more immediate SEO impact per pound spent. Digital PR campaigns need creative development, outreach, and relationship building—all of which cost money before you see results.

If you're risk-averse about link penalties: Digital PR links are among the safest possible. They're genuinely editorial. But quality link building from reputable providers—using diverse sources and natural patterns—isn't high-risk either. The risk comes from cheap, obvious link schemes, not from all link building.

The Combined Approach

Most successful SEO campaigns use both approaches. Digital PR for occasional high-authority links and brand building. Traditional link building for consistent baseline acquisition. The combination creates a natural-looking profile with both prestige links and volume.

The mix depends on your resources and priorities. A brand-focused company might weight 70% toward digital PR. A pure affiliate play might be 90% link building. Most businesses fall somewhere in between.

What matters is understanding what each approach delivers and making intentional choices rather than paying for one thing while expecting another.

Questions to Ask Providers

If an agency pitches you 'digital PR,' ask specifics: What does a typical campaign involve? What publications have you secured coverage in? What's the average link count and domain authority per campaign? Can you show examples of actual placements?

If they're vague or the examples look like standard guest posts on low-tier sites, you're probably looking at rebranded link building. That's not necessarily bad—link building works—but you shouldn't pay PR prices for it.

For traditional link building, the questions are different: Where do the links come from? What's the average DA/DR? How do you ensure the links look natural? What's your approach to anchor text diversity? Reputable providers have clear answers. Our approach to safe, effective link building is something we're always transparent about.

The Bottom Line

Digital PR and link building are different tools serving overlapping goals. Digital PR creates newsworthy content to earn editorial coverage and links. Link building directly acquires links through various tactics. Both can improve rankings. Both have legitimate places in an SEO strategy.

Don't get caught up in which sounds more prestigious. Focus on what actually moves your rankings efficiently. For most sites, that's some combination of both—consistent link building for baseline growth, occasional PR wins for high-authority boosts.

The best approach is the one that fits your budget, timeline, industry, and risk tolerance. Anyone claiming one approach is universally superior is oversimplifying to make a sale.
