PBNs can be quite tricky, and having been burned in the past I was very apprehensive. But their service happens to be quite safe as my website has not seen any penalties. On the contrary, we’ve seen an increase in rankings.

I must say, quite an affordable service for the quality delivered. The links are well placed and the websites look genuine for the most part. I’ll be back again.

If you've been watching your rankings swing wildly over the past few weeks, you're not alone. According to Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable, who has been documenting Google search volatility for over two decades, the current period represents some of the most sustained instability he's ever covered. 'I can post about this every day,' Schwartz noted in early March, 'but now I am at the point of just doing it weekly.' When someone who reports on Google updates daily says the volatility is too frequent to cover individually, that tells you something significant is happening.

The numbers from third-party tracking tools confirm what site owners are experiencing. SEMrush sensors have been registering readings as high as 9.5, indicating extreme volatility. Mozcast, Algoroo, and other tracking tools have shown similar patterns of sustained instability throughout February and into March. This isn't a single update rolling out—it's something more complex and ongoing.

The Timeline: Wave After Wave of Ranking Changes

To understand where we are, we need to trace how we got here. The December 2025 core update kicked off on December 11, 2025, at approximately 12:25 pm ET and completed on December 29, 2025, at around 2:05 pm ET. That update alone produced two significant spikes—one on December 13th and another on December 20th. Many sites were still processing the implications of that update when the new year brought fresh instability.

January 2026 saw unconfirmed ranking volatility on January 6th, January 12th, January 15th, January 21st, and around January 26th-27th. Then January 29th onwards brought another wave that continued into February. The volatility touched down again on February 2nd, February 10th, throughout the week of February 15th, and essentially hasn't stopped since.

The January 21st volatility was particularly brutal. Lily Ray, VP of SEO Strategy at Amsive, documented that 'the late January ranking volatility was BRUTAL for these 2 companies and they just keep dropping. These are not small sites; they are brands everyone knows.' When major brands with substantial SEO resources are experiencing significant drops, smaller sites understandably feel the impact even more acutely.

As we've moved into March, the tools spiked again around March 1st and the volatility has remained heated. The chatter in SEO communities hasn't calmed down since late February. Many in the industry are speculating that a March core update is imminent, with some reporting SEMrush sensors ranging to 9.5—levels typically associated with major algorithm updates.

The Only Confirmed Update: February 2026 Discover Core Update

The only officially confirmed update during this entire turbulent period was the February 2026 Google Discover Core Update, which started on February 5th and took over three weeks to complete, finishing on February 27th. This was notably the first time Google announced a core update specific to Discover rather than general search.

According to Google's announcement, the Discover update was designed to show users more locally relevant content from websites based in their country, reduce sensational content and clickbait, and surface more in-depth, original, and timely content from websites with demonstrated expertise. Google specifically noted that 'since many sites demonstrate deep knowledge across a wide range of subjects, our systems are designed to identify expertise on a topic-by-topic basis.'

Crucially, Google has explicitly stated this Discover update should have no impact on standard search results—meaning all the search volatility we've been experiencing represents either unconfirmed updates or changes Google simply isn't commenting on. The distinction matters: whatever is causing the search ranking instability is separate from the Discover changes.

What Google Isn't Saying (And Why It Matters)

One of the most frustrating aspects of this period has been Google's silence. Despite clear evidence of significant ranking changes affecting countless sites, Google has not confirmed any search algorithm updates beyond the Discover-specific update. This isn't unusual—Google frequently makes changes without announcement—but the scale of unacknowledged volatility is remarkable.

Glenn Gabe, a respected algorithm recovery consultant who has been analysing Google updates for nearly two decades, believes we're looking at what amounts to a reviews system update. 'Google stopped announcing reviews updates a while ago since the system is now integrated into core,' Gabe noted in early February. His analysis suggests the patterns match previous reviews updates, particularly in how they're affecting sites with review and comparison content.

The practical implication for site owners is significant: you know something changed, but you don't know exactly what or why. This makes diagnosis and response considerably harder than during announced updates where Google at least indicates what systems are being adjusted.

The Listicle Crackdown: A Major Pattern Emerges

One of the clearest patterns to emerge from this volatility period involves self-promotional listicles. Lily Ray published detailed analysis showing sharp visibility declines across sites that had heavily invested in 'best of' style content where they ranked themselves at the top of their own lists.

The tactic had been extremely effective for visibility in both traditional search and AI-generated answers. Companies would publish articles titled 'Best [Service Category] Companies in 2026' and place themselves at position one, followed by competitors. These pages often ranked well and were being cited in AI Overviews and ChatGPT responses. It was, as many called it, a GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) hack that actually worked—until January 2026.

Ray documented visibility drops of 30% to 50% for well-known B2B and SaaS brands that had relied heavily on this approach. One example showed an $8 billion B2B brand whose organic visibility dropped by 49% between January 21st and February 2nd. The company's blog made up 77% of the site's visibility, and the blog section showed a massive decline while other subfolders and subdomains showed much smaller drops or even gains.

When Ray dug into the affected blog content, common patterns emerged: self-serving listicles, highly-similar programmatic content templates, excessive informational content targeting 'who, what, when' search terms, and overuse of '2026' in titles despite the year being only weeks old. But the self-promotional listicles appeared consistently across the hardest-hit sites.

Beyond Listicles: The Broader Reviews System Theory

While listicles have received the most attention, Glenn Gabe's analysis suggests the impact extends to what appears to be a broader reviews system update. Sites with review and comparison content that lacks genuine editorial independence have been hit across multiple formats, not just listicles.

Google's Quality Rater Guidelines have long emphasised that reviews should demonstrate real experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. Reviews that appear biased toward the reviewer's own products or services, or that lack genuine evaluation methodology, conflict with these quality standards. What we may be seeing is algorithmic enforcement of principles that have existed in the guidelines for years.

Gabe also documented what he calls 'Mt. AI'—sites that scaled AI-generated content rapidly, saw initial success, and then crashed just as dramatically. 'Yet another example of a site publishing a ton of AI-generated content that surged... and ultimately came crashing down,' Gabe noted. 'I'm sure the site owners were saying, "AI content is amazing! Look at our trending!"... until the crash happened.' The pattern of surge followed by collapse has appeared repeatedly across sites that prioritised content volume over genuine quality signals.

Real Impact on Real Sites

The WebmasterWorld forums and comment sections on Search Engine Roundtable have been filled with reports from affected site owners throughout this period. The stories paint a picture of genuine disruption:

'Massive drop tonight -50% and big attack of bots (>200%).' '11+ hours gone and my global site so far is at 21% of its normal traffic whereas I would expect it to be 50+%.' 'My French site lost lot of its rankings, with RPM at its lowest in years.' 'Highest non stop volatility I have seen in a decade, constant massive shifts several times a day back and forth. Sites never seen before pumped to top then dropped a few hours later over and over.'

The frustration is palpable. One commenter noted: 'The volatility lately is exhausting. It feels like we're in a constant state of unconfirmed updates. Hard to stay hopeful when the rankings keep swinging so wildly.' Another observed that 'only spam and slop is gaining visibility. I don't have any spam or slop sites on my own, so nothing is doing well, but even among my own sites, the less value it provides, the less authority and history it has, the better it is doing.'

It's worth noting that not all reports are negative. Some sites have seen recoveries and gains during this period. The volatility appears to be reshuffling rankings rather than uniformly demoting sites, which is consistent with how core-style updates typically behave.

What This Means for Link Building

Link building during volatile periods requires a specific mindset. The instability creates both challenges and opportunities that thoughtful link builders can navigate successfully.

Don't panic or overreact. Volatility means rankings are unstable in both directions. A drop today might reverse tomorrow—or next week when another wave hits. Making dramatic changes to your link building strategy based on short-term movements during a volatile period is usually a mistake. Continue with sound fundamentals while the algorithm settles.

Quality and relevance matter more than ever. Every indication suggests Google is tightening quality standards, particularly around content that appears manipulative or self-serving. Links from genuinely relevant sources—acquired through legitimate outreach and built on the principles of relevance and authority—are more likely to retain value through algorithm updates. For context on which metrics to prioritise, we cover the signals that matter most in our guide to link building metrics.

Diversification provides stability. Sites with diverse link profiles from varied source types tend to weather volatility better than sites dependent on a single link category. If your entire backlink profile comes from one tactic that happens to be devalued, you're exposed. Spreading acquisition across multiple legitimate channels reduces this risk.

Maintain consistent link velocity. Stopping link building during volatility often leads to ranking decay once things stabilise. Links naturally lose value over time as we detail in our analysis of link decay, and gaps in acquisition compound this effect. The sites that emerge strongest from volatile periods are typically those that maintained steady, quality link acquisition throughout.

Tracking and Monitoring During Volatility

During periods like this, enhanced monitoring becomes essential. Track rankings for your important keywords daily rather than weekly. Note not just position changes but also which competitors are moving—understanding whether you're being displaced by specific sites or experiencing broader index shuffling helps diagnose what's happening.

Monitor Google Search Console closely for any changes in impressions, clicks, or average position. GSC data often reveals patterns before rank tracking tools catch them. Pay particular attention to which specific pages are affected—site-wide drops suggest different causes than drops concentrated in certain content types.

Watch the industry trackers and commentary. Search Engine Roundtable, Glenn Gabe's analysis at GSQi, and the WebmasterWorld forums provide real-time insight into what others are experiencing. If your patterns match what the broader community reports, you're likely seeing algorithm-driven changes rather than site-specific issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a March 2026 core update coming?

Many in the industry expect Google to announce a core update soon given the sustained volatility. However, Google has made no official announcements as of March 10, 2026. It's possible that what we're experiencing is a series of smaller, unannounced adjustments rather than a single major update. Either way, the practical impact is the same: rankings are unstable and quality matters more than ever.

Should I pause link building during volatility?

Generally no. Pausing link building during volatility means you'll emerge from the volatile period with a weaker backlink profile than competitors who continued building. Unless you have specific reason to believe your link building approach is causing problems, maintain steady acquisition of quality links. Our guide on why link building campaigns fail covers common mistakes to avoid.

My rankings dropped significantly—was I penalised?

Ranking drops during high volatility periods don't necessarily indicate penalties or problems with your site. Check Google Search Console's Manual Actions section—if nothing appears there, you haven't received a manual penalty. Algorithmic drops during volatile periods often recover, sometimes within days or with subsequent volatility waves. Avoid making dramatic changes until you've observed the pattern over at least a few weeks.

Are self-promotional listicles finished as a tactic?

The evidence suggests Google is devaluing this approach, though some examples still rank. The tactic was always questionable from a quality perspective—ranking yourself first in your own 'best of' content lacks editorial independence. Sites that built significant visibility through this approach should diversify into more sustainable content strategies rather than doubling down.

How long will this volatility last?

Unknown. The volatility has been sustained since late January with only brief periods of relative calm. If Google announces a major core update, we typically see volatility continue through the rollout period (often two to three weeks) before stabilising. However, the pattern of frequent unannounced adjustments could continue indefinitely. The best approach is to build for long-term quality rather than trying to time algorithm cycles.

The Bigger Picture

Volatility periods are uncomfortable, but they're also clarifying. The sites that struggle most during algorithm instability are typically those with quality issues, manipulative tactics, or thin content foundations. The sites that emerge stronger are those built on genuine expertise, real value for users, and sustainable SEO practices.

For link builders, the message from this volatility period is consistent with long-term best practices: quality over quantity, relevance over raw metrics, and consistency over sporadic campaigns. If you're recovering from a ranking drop, our recovery roadmap provides a systematic approach to diagnosis and remediation.

We'll continue monitoring the situation and update our analysis as patterns emerge. In the meantime, focus on building links that would pass scrutiny under any algorithm iteration—links from relevant sources, acquired through legitimate means, that genuinely reflect authority in your space.
