How Many Links Do You Actually Need to Rank?

I get asked this question constantly. People want a number—a target they can aim for. Give me a figure I can budget around, they say. Tell me how many links I need to buy.

PBNs can be quite tricky, and having been burned in the past I was very apprehensive. But their service happens to be quite safe as my website has not seen any penalties. On the contrary, we’ve seen an increase in rankings.

I must say, quite an affordable service for the quality delivered. The links are well placed and the websites look genuine for the most part. I’ll be back again.

The honest answer is frustrating: it depends entirely on what you're trying to rank for, who you're competing against, and what you're starting with.

But that's not helpful, so let me give you something better—a framework for figuring out what YOU specifically need.

Why There's No Universal Number

The number of links needed to rank varies by orders of magnitude depending on your situation. A local plumber trying to rank for 'plumber in [small town]' might need 10-20 decent links. An affiliate site trying to rank for 'best credit cards' might need thousands—and still not crack page one.

The variables that matter most: keyword difficulty, competitor link profiles, your site's existing authority, how well your on-page SEO is executed, and frankly, how patient you're willing to be.

Anyone who quotes you a specific number without analyzing these factors is guessing. And you shouldn't pay for guesses.

The Competitor Analysis Method

The most reliable way to estimate your link needs is to study who's already ranking for your target keywords. This isn't complicated, but it requires actual research.

Pull up your target keyword. Look at the top 10 results. For each one, check their domain-level metrics (DR, DA) and the number of referring domains pointing to both their domain overall and specifically to the ranking page.

Tools like Ahrefs and Semrush make this straightforward. We've covered whether Ahrefs is useful for finding backlink opportunities before—it's essential for this kind of competitive analysis.

What you're looking for is patterns. If positions 1-3 all have 500+ referring domains to the ranking page, and positions 8-10 have around 100, you now have a rough target range. You probably need at least 100 to compete for page one, and likely 300+ to challenge for top positions.

Page-Level vs Domain-Level Links

This is where many people go wrong. They look at a competitor's total domain backlinks—say, 50,000—and panic. How can I possibly compete with that?

But Google ranks pages, not just domains. What matters most is the links pointing to the specific page you're competing against, plus the overall domain authority lending it credibility.

A competitor might have 50,000 domain backlinks but only 30 pointing to their ranking page. If your domain is reasonably strong, you might outrank them with 50 well-targeted links to your competing page.

That said, domain authority does matter. A page on Forbes with 10 backlinks will often outrank a page on a brand new domain with 100 backlinks. The domain's accumulated authority transfers. So your analysis needs to consider both levels.

The Quality Multiplier

Not all links are created equal. Ten links from high-authority, relevant sites can outperform a hundred links from low-quality sources. This complicates the 'how many' question significantly.

When analyzing competitors, don't just count links—look at where they're coming from. If a competitor has 200 links but they're mostly from forums, directories, and blog comments, that profile is beatable with 50 solid contextual links from real sites.

Conversely, if a competitor has 200 links from major publications, industry sites, and high-authority blogs, you're facing a tougher climb. Quality links are harder and more expensive to acquire, and they carry more weight.

This is why understanding different backlink types matters. A diverse profile with homepage links, contextual PBN links, niche edits, and citations will typically perform better than the same number of links from a single source type.

Difficulty Tiers: A Rough Guide

While I can't give you exact numbers, I can offer rough tiers based on years of observation. These assume decent on-page SEO and reasonable content quality.

Low competition keywords (local terms, long-tail queries, obscure niches): Often rankable with 10-30 quality links to the target page, sometimes fewer. Sites targeting these typically do well with our links designed for low competition keywords—you don't need to overspend.

Medium competition keywords (regional terms, moderately searched commercial queries): Usually 50-150 links to the target page, with a domain that has at least a few hundred referring domains overall.

High competition keywords (national commercial terms, popular informational queries): Typically 200-500+ links to the page, often requiring a domain with thousands of referring domains. These campaigns take months or years.

Extremely competitive keywords (insurance, gambling, credit cards, broad commercial terms): We've written about which niches are hardest to rank. These require industrial-scale link building, often thousands of links over extended periods, plus exceptional content and brand signals. Budgets can run into six figures.

The Velocity Consideration

It's not just about total links—it's about how quickly you can build them relative to competitors.

If a competitor is acquiring 20 new links per month and you're building 10, you're losing ground even if your current numbers are close. You need to match or exceed their velocity to close gaps.

Check competitor link acquisition trends in your SEO tools. Are they actively building? Growing steadily? Or have they plateaued? A stagnant competitor with strong existing links is different from one actively building.

Starting From Zero vs Building on Strength

Your starting position dramatically affects how many links you need.

A brand new domain needs to build foundational authority before page-specific links become fully effective. You might need 50-100 links just to establish enough domain credibility for Google to take your pages seriously. Then you add page-specific links on top.

An established domain with existing authority can often rank new pages with far fewer links. The domain's accumulated trust carries over. A site with DR 60 might rank a new page with 20 targeted links where a DR 20 site would need 80.

This is why building homepage and domain-level links matters—they lift everything on your domain, making individual page ranking easier over time.

The Content Factor

Links aren't everything. I know that's heresy coming from a link building company, but it's true.

Exceptional content can rank with fewer links than mediocre content. Google measures user satisfaction, time on page, pogo-sticking back to search results. If your content genuinely serves users better than competitors, you get a boost that translates to needing fewer links.

Conversely, if your content is thin, poorly structured, or doesn't satisfy search intent, no amount of links will save you. Well, maybe if you build enough—but it's inefficient. Fix the content first, then build links to something worth ranking.

A Practical Process

Here's how to figure out your actual link needs:

One: Identify your target keywords. Be specific—actual queries you want to rank for, not vague topics.

Two: Analyze the top 10 results for each keyword. Note domain authority/rating, page-level referring domains, and domain-level referring domains.

Three: Assess link quality for the top results. Are these profiles built on spam or legitimate links? This tells you what kind of links you need, not just how many.

Four: Compare against your current position. How large is the gap? Do you need 50 links or 500?

Five: Factor in your timeline and budget. Can you close that gap in 6 months? A year? Three years?

Six: Start building and measure results. Adjust based on what's actually moving rankings.

If this sounds like more analysis than you want to do yourself, our backlinks recommender tool can help point you in the right direction based on your situation.

The Honest Bottom Line

More links are almost always better than fewer links, assuming quality is maintained. The question is really about efficiency—how few links can you get away with while still achieving your ranking goals?

The answer comes from studying your specific competitive landscape, not from generic advice. What works in one niche might be completely inadequate in another.

Do the research. Know your competitors. Build a realistic plan based on actual data, not hopes or guesses. That's how you figure out how many links you actually need.
