Tiered Link Building: Does It Still Work?

Tiered link building is one of those topics that splits the SEO community. Some swear by it as a power multiplier. Others dismiss it as outdated or risky. A few pretend it doesn't exist because it feels too 'black hat' to discuss openly.

PBNs can be quite tricky, and having been burned in the past I was very apprehensive. But their service happens to be quite safe as my website has not seen any penalties. On the contrary, we’ve seen an increase in rankings.

I must say, quite an affordable service for the quality delivered. The links are well placed and the websites look genuine for the most part. I’ll be back again.

Tiered link building is one of those topics that splits the SEO community. Some swear by it as a power multiplier. Others dismiss it as outdated or risky. A few pretend it doesn't exist because it feels too 'black hat' to discuss openly.

So what's the actual truth in 2026? Does building links to your links still make sense? Let's look at this properly.

What Tiered Link Building Actually Is

For anyone unfamiliar, the concept is straightforward.

Tier 1 links point directly to your money site—the site you're trying to rank. These are your highest quality links: PBN links, guest posts, niche edits, editorial links. Whatever you're using as your primary link building approach.

Tier 2 links point to your Tier 1 links. So if you've got a guest post on Site A that links to your money site, Tier 2 links would point to that guest post on Site A. The idea is to boost the authority of Site A, making its link to you more powerful.

Tier 3 and beyond continue the chain—links pointing to your Tier 2 links, and so on. In practice, most people who use tiered strategies stop at Tier 2, maybe Tier 3. Beyond that, you're pretty far removed from any real impact.

The theory is that link equity flows through each tier, ultimately benefiting your money site. A stronger Tier 1 page passes more value than a weaker one, so boosting your Tier 1 pages indirectly boosts your rankings.

The Logic That Makes It Work

The underlying principle is sound. Google absolutely considers the authority of linking pages when evaluating links. A link from a page that itself has strong backlinks carries more weight than a link from an orphaned page with no links of its own.

This isn't speculation—it's fundamental to how PageRank works. PageRank flows through links. A page accumulates PageRank from its inbound links, then distributes a portion of that PageRank through its outbound links. More inbound links to your Tier 1 pages means more PageRank available to flow to your money site.

We've seen this play out empirically. When a page linking to you gains significant new backlinks, the value of its link to you increases—sometimes measurably. This happens naturally all the time, which is part of why links from popular, well-linked sites are more valuable than links from obscure ones.

Tiered link building is essentially manufacturing this effect deliberately rather than waiting for it to happen organically.

Where It Gets Complicated

The theory is solid. The execution is where things get messy.

Quality degradation across tiers. In the traditional tiered approach, each tier uses progressively lower quality links. Tier 1 might be proper guest posts and PBN links. Tier 2 might be web 2.0s and social bookmarks. Tier 3 might be automated spam. The assumption is that Google won't penalise spam that's two or three steps removed from your money site.

That assumption was already questionable, and it's become more questionable over time. Google's systems have gotten better at evaluating link chains and understanding manipulation patterns. A Tier 1 link that's propped up entirely by spam might not carry the value you expect—and if the spam is toxic enough, the Tier 1 page itself might get devalued, taking your link down with it.

Diminishing returns. Link equity doesn't flow perfectly through tiers. Each hop in the chain loses some value. By the time you're at Tier 3 pointing to Tier 2 pointing to Tier 1 pointing to your site, the actual impact on your rankings is attenuated significantly. You're building a lot of links for marginal benefit.

Complexity and cost. Managing multiple tiers means tracking multiple layers of links across multiple platforms. It's more work, more potential points of failure, and more things to monitor. For many sites, that complexity isn't justified by the incremental gains.

What Actually Works in 2026

Having watched tiered strategies evolve over the years, here's what I'd say actually works now:

Selective Tier 2 to high-value Tier 1 pages. If you've got a particularly strong guest post or a high-quality PBN placement that's already performing well, sending some additional link equity to that page can amplify its impact. This isn't about mass-building Tier 2 to everything—it's about strategic reinforcement of your best Tier 1 assets.

Quality Tier 2, not spam. The 'spam at Tier 2 because it's safe' approach is outdated thinking. If you're going to build Tier 2, use reasonable quality links—web 2.0 properties with actual content, social signals, maybe some lower-tier PBN links. Stuff that won't get the Tier 1 page penalised or devalued.

Indexing assistance rather than authority building. One legitimate use of Tier 2 links is helping Tier 1 pages get discovered and indexed. If you place a link and Google hasn't found it yet, some Tier 2 links can accelerate that discovery. This is a crawling benefit rather than an authority benefit, but it's real.

Skip Tier 3 and beyond. Unless you're in an extremely competitive niche and have resources to burn, anything past Tier 2 is probably not worth the effort. The impact is too diluted, the complexity too high, and the risk-reward ratio unfavourable.

When Tiered Building Makes Sense

Tiered link building isn't for everyone or every situation. It makes the most sense when:

You're already building quality Tier 1 links and want to maximise their value. Tiered building amplifies what's already there—it's not a substitute for proper Tier 1 links.

You're in a competitive niche where marginal gains matter. If you're competing against well-funded competitors in a high-value space, squeezing extra value from your link building can be worth the additional effort.

You have the infrastructure to do it properly. Half-arsed tiered building—spammy Tier 2, no tracking, no quality control—is worse than not doing it at all.

Your Tier 1 links are on pages you don't control. When you've placed a guest post on someone else's site, you can't directly improve that page. Tier 2 links are the only way to boost its authority.

When It Doesn't Make Sense

Skip tiered building when:

Your Tier 1 foundation is weak. If you haven't built solid direct links to your money site, that's where your energy should go. Don't build a pyramid on a shaky base.

You're in a low-competition niche. If basic link building is enough to rank, adding tiers just adds complexity without meaningful benefit.

You can't commit to quality across tiers. Spammy tiered building creates more risk than value. Either do it properly or don't do it.

Budget is tight. Money spent on Tier 2 is money not spent on Tier 1. In most cases, an extra quality Tier 1 link will outperform a bunch of Tier 2 links pointing to your existing Tier 1.

Our Honest Take

We offer tiered link building as an option, but we're honest with clients about when it makes sense and when it doesn't.

For most sites, focusing on building more high-quality Tier 1 links delivers better results than splitting resources across tiers. The compounding effect of quality links means each additional strong Tier 1 link adds meaningful value. Diluting budget across tiers often means fewer Tier 1 links, which slows that compounding.

That said, for clients who've already established strong Tier 1 foundations and want to maximise every placement, strategic Tier 2 reinforcement can squeeze additional value from existing assets. It's a tool in the toolkit—useful in the right circumstances, unnecessary in many others.

Does tiered link building still work in 2026? Yes, if done correctly and in the right situations. Is it essential? No. Is it the best use of resources for most sites? Usually not. The answer, as with most things in SEO, depends on your specific situation.
